I'm too much of a mid-westerner to not be employed. Staying at home with my family has been fantastic, but collecting money just because I don't have a job isn't for me. After a lot of thought, some hardship, oodles of emails and phone calls, and several different offers from supportive friends and acquaintances, I have made a choice regarding the career path I want to follow. I have decided that my future is in politics, and with the office of Senate President Emil Jones.

Okay, so the latest trend in high-fashion dog breeding is a mix between a pug, and a beagle. I present to you, The Puggle! Cute, and with a longer snout, it probably doesn't have the sinus problems and infected nose creases like pugs. As a beagle enthusiast, I think I would just as soon spend a few bucks on the pure hound...or maybe a labradoodle.

Don't Hijack Rosa Parks' Bus!

"We will not sit in the back of the bus!" That's the passionate statement of many minorities during the civil rights movement and is now part of an emphatic plea to House Speaker Mike Madigan to stop picking on the riverboat gaming industry in Illinois. Who made that plea? The mega-waspy extra wonderbread encrusted State Senator Mike Jacobs.

I'm not complaining about racism here, but can we let noble causes be noble causes without shoe-horning our issues of lesser importance into them. Abortion doctors are not like Hitler, your step father is not like Pol Pot, and Sen Jacobs is not Hodding Carter or, for these purposes, Rosa Parks.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the gaming industry and would like to see a casino in Springfield, but let's stay focused and leave civil rights statements to civil rights issues.

Note:

Sen Jacobs did not have to use a different drinking fountain, he was not the victim of a race riot or lynching, Speaker Madigan did not turn dogs or fire hoses on him during times of demonstration or debate, and he had all the educational advantages of any other son of an Illinois State Senator (Denny Jacobs).

Additional Programming Note: Sen. Mike Jacobs called in from the senate floor (ballsy) to debate me on this topic, live on the air...he admitted that his plight isn't quite to the caliber of Rosa Parks, but emphasized the importance of a freshman Senator standing up to House Speaker Mike Madigan. Okay...I feel better. Instant damage control is a respectable route for Jacobs, and he did it well.

What Do I Know? I'm Just Running For Office

"I haven't had a chance to develop any issues yet." Ward 4 Alderman and official candidate for Rep. Raymond Poe's 99th house seat got off to a pretty squishy start Tuesday. Redpath expressed the need for the state to pay off its bills, but then quickly back-tracked when a reporter said prison workers felt they were in danger because of increasing populations and inadequate funding. I won't go so far as to say that Redpath is unqualified for the position, in fact, he could be a great state rep, but sticking to issues and not getting distracted is very important to a campaign.

This isn't the first time the local democrat party has floated a candidate that didn't have a platform. Springfield Mayor Tim Davlin ( who I think has done a pretty good job since elected) had no platform during the first two weeks of the race. I was told by a ranking member of the party to not ask too many detailed questions of the mayoral candidate because, "we still haven't developed his campaign."

This is unacceptable, and I find myself put off by the local party from time to time...this is one of those times. Let's get serious.

The Governor Was Off The Page?!

For those that turned into 970 WMAY for live coverage of his All Kids speech, you probably wouldn't think this speech deviated too much from other speeches he has delivered. However, if you are looking for a copy of the speech, good luck. According to Blagojevich's staff, there is no copy of the speech because nothing was written out. The Governor supposedly went off copy points.

I did notice that he flipped several pages over the course of the relatively short speech, but I was surprised because it didn't seem like there was a lot of information on each of those pages. Do you think Blagojevich delivered his address off the cuff? The last time he tried that, he talked about his testicles...that didn't happen this time, I'm speechless.

Higher Education? I Don't Think So

Not even proponents of Chief Illiniwek can claim historical accuracy, so why is it a state funded institution of higher education would support something like the chief? I know some would argue the honor involved in Chief Illiniwek's halftime "ceremony," but let's not forget that the very honorable name of the song the chief dances to is called "Oskee Wow Wow." I've done a marginal amount of historical research into the name Oskee Wow Wow, and I've been unable to find any such figure in the rich cultural history of the Illiniwek the school wishes to preserve through the use of this mascot.

Yes, I know the Illiniwek were a conglomerate of tribes that died out a few centuries ago, largely due to an amplified version of the same ignorance going on today. I also know that the outfit Illiniwek wears is from the Oglala Sioux, about 1500 miles off, but hey, while we're making up crap like Oskee Wow Wow, why not?

I know honor is the intent of Chief Illinwek, but all the chief does is bring disgrace to an otherwise outstanding and reputable school my tax dollars help fund.

State Senator Bill Brady (R-Barbieworld) said on The Jim Leach Morning Show that our public schools need to have more Bible and God. And I thought the people that wanted to teach intelligent design were crack pots, now we have a new kind of dumb infiltrating the realm of proposed public policy. Is this a hope of reaching a compromise?

If you believe Brady's poll numbers, which would match the blood/alcohol content of someone who just took communion, you might think his ideas aren't exactly popular. Unfortunately we seem to hear more and more about the need for a little religion in public school. I think we need more education in school.

It also didn't help that Brady needed an explanation of what intelligent design was before he could comment. Judy, for the sake of the GOP in Illinois and cogent discourse in the primary...run!

Back To The Drawing Board For Those Annoying Homeless People

The Salvation Army is getting a 30 day extension to develop a plan for it's proposed NW end location before the proposal is voted on by the full city council. I would like to open a post for suggestions that might make this facility more suitable for the finicky needs of those well-to-do north end residents. My suggestion: Well, I don't really know what my suggestion is because I don't know why the hell you wouldn't want a homeless shelter in your neighborhood. Any elitist pig that believes that homeless people are all alcoholics or drug addicts or sex offenders needs to spend some time at a soup kitchen or bread line. These are people that have fallen on hard times, and if it is their fault or not, we have an obligation to help out in whatever way we can.

The way some of the residents are opposing the Salvation Army's plan to put a facility on J. David Jones Parkway, you would think that homeless people would be pushed into these people's houses. I hope the Salvation Army informs the neighborhood about the need for homeless facilities and this absurd exercise in marginal pay-scale elitism comes to a speedy close.

John School!? Seriously? If you are willing to put yourself in a position to screw a Springfield prostitute, do you think John School will help? If we really want to help prostitutes out, really, PORA (People For the Ethical Treatment Of Hookers) will get off their butts with this do-gooder John School crap, and lobby to legalize whoring. For those that might be unfamiliar with John School, it is explained by the State Journal Register that:

A school for the customers, or "johns," would be designed to educate
first-time offenders about such issues as the legal consequences of
prostitution; the health risks involved; the effects of prostitution on women,
families and the community; how pimps recruit sex workers; sexual addition; and
other matters.
The goal is to target the demand for prostitution and reduce
the rate of recidivism among johns.
"It's to rehabilitate people who are
customers of prostitutes," Carver said. "Usually it involves different phases.
Very often a police officer will address the group first and tell them how there
will be increasing consequences to them if they keep doing what they're doing.
There's a public health person involved who tells them the risk of engaging in
this activity. The third part is survivors of prostitution talk to them and give
them their perspective."

I don't say prostitution should be legalized because I'm all about trolling for hookers on weekends, but because it is a much healthier, and better regulated profession in countries like Spain, and areas of Nevada. Instead we get this notion that they want our help from the evil lifestyle and the only way it can be done is through eradication of the need. Well, if that works I have an idea for the people who think they can get rid of drugs...We'll just shame them into realizing that drugs are bad, and...problem solved. If you are looking to have sex with a 5'2" tall 185 lb woman for 50 bucks and a candy bar, chances are public health isn't on your mind.

During my recovery I realize I might be unable to meet your blogging needs. There are several issues I'm not informing myself about because, well, it just isn't good for the healing process to worry. If issues aren't your thing, then the best time you have ever had drugged off your ass during times of MEDICAL recuperation would be fun to read. It has to be medical, otherwise you are just doing drugs, and we know how the government feels about that. Well, it's been over 27 years since my tiny fetus was developing a friend I like to call "appendix." Wednesday morning at 7:15 our relationship will come to a sad end. Now Governor Rod Blagojevich will stroll easily into his next term, and everyone will wonder why. I think Edgar couldn't handle a non-sure thing. I'm not saying that a lot of downstate dems wouldn't have hopped on the Edgar train, but I think he understood that he was no match for Rod. Oh well...NEXT!

I just read that the "break away" unions are announcing plans to unionize Wal-Mart. For those that aren't hip to labor issues, the break aways (SEIU, Unite Here, and Teamsters to name a few) are forming a new coalition called "The Change To Win Coalition." From this new group they hope to bring the prospect of parity in salaries from female to male employees, better benefits and hours, and all the other good things that come along with being part of a union. I hope they are successful. You can check out the SJR for a bit more on this.

Why is it people are so gopped up on goop about the possibility of Jim Edgar running for Gov? What would he bring to the table? Health problems aside, the man is one well placed acquittal away from the M-S-I scandal. Perhaps that pales in comparison to the perceived corruption in Blago's administration, but there certainly aren't any convictions associated with him...yet. Does anyone think he can change the "culture of corruption" that has supposedly infiltrated Illinois politics? The republicans should worry more about bringing someone new to the table, work that farm team, and show us that they can be the organized GOP of old. Why would Edgar be the answer?

Does anyone think Springfield Mayor Tim Davlin is having a difficult time managing race relations? This article in the SJ-R covers the he said/she said angle of differing depositions between former Chief of Staff, Letitia Dewith-Anderson, and Davlin. Has the mayor shown that he understands the race issues in Springfield? Will this have a negative impact on his reelection efforts? Does it even matter? The black leadership in Springfield has done a poor job of organizing, and if the African-American populations in town don't show up to the polls, why should the mayor care?

Don't Bring Down Our Skyrocketing Property Values With Your Homeless Shelter

The Springfield aristocrats have hit a new low. Pushing the city's Planning and Zoning Commission to deny the Salvation Army's request to build a homeless shelter is such an arrogant lack of human understanding, I have a hard time expressing my thoughts without swearing. What makes matters worse is that the aristocracy that we are dealing with in this instance, isn't even born out of wealth...but the neighborhoods surrounding J. David Jones Parkway. This is not Panther Creek, in fact I would be alarmed to find a house worth more than 150-thousand dollars in that area. How can these people not understand the needs of the homeless? Why did three of the pansy-ass commissioners vote present? How can we deny human beings basic needs based on not wanting that element in the area? Here is Chris Wetterich's article in the SJR.

Reluctantly responding to an outpouring of public sentiment, the Springfield
Planning and Zoning Commission Wednesday recommended denial of a request by The
Salvation Army to build its new community center and homeless shelter in the
1400 block of J. David Jones Parkway.
The vote was 6-1, with three members
voting "present." The Springfield City Council, however, has the final say.
Residents and business owners in the area lauded the charity for its mission
during the 100 minutes of discussion on the matter but said they did not want
the shelter or the type of people it would house in their neighborhood.
Others argued having a homeless shelter would be unsightly along the road
leading to Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, Oak Ridge Cemetery and Lincoln's
Tomb.
Representatives of The Salvation Army vowed to press on with their
case to change the property's zoning from B-2 commercial to an R-3 (b) general
residence district with a conditional permitted use for a rehabilitation home.
The J. David Jones location is the most affordable, they said, although it
hasn't been purchased yet.
Some commission members admitted being ashamed
and embarrassed by their votes.
"Some of the things we heard saddened me.
We're good neighbors when it's convenient. It's OK on East Cook Street where I
grew up. Put it on the east end. It's all right over there. Just not in my
neighborhood," said commissioner Francis Gigante, before casting his vote
against the charity.
"I want to include myself in this," Gigante said.
"We're frightened by the unknown. Quite frankly, I'm just a little ashamed ...
especially in light of what happened with Hurricane Katrina."
Commissioner
Vince Looby, one of the "present" votes, said he volunteered for three years at
the Helping Hands homeless shelter.
"I never had any fears," Looby said,
adding that there was a "connotation to it (the discussion) that disturbs me.
I'm disappointed in the level of testimony."
The commission's staff had
recommended approval of the petition. Typically when property is changed from
commercial to residential zoning, it is considered "downzoned," which is usually
favorable to nearby residents because it rules out noisy businesses.
But
arguments such as those presented by Monte Reevis, a dentist who works in the
1300 block of J. David Jones Parkway, prevailed.
Reevis pointed to a Tuesday
State Journal-Register article detailing how parolee Robert B. Larkin, 41, who
had been staying at The Salvation Army shelter on North Sixth Street, pleaded
guilty to home invasion and attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault in a
2004 incident.
"I have workers who arrive there at 6:45 in the morning, and
nobody's going to be around there except the homeless. What are they going to
do, break into the neighborhoods looking for drugs and money? Where will they
spend their days? Roaming the neighborhoods. Are they going to go into the
cemetery and urinate and defecate on the gravesites and drive down property
values?" Reevis said.
His comments were met with a round of applause from
the 60 or so members of the audience.
Opal Smith, a 30-plus-year resident of
the 1300 block of Osburn Avenue, said she lives alone and leaves for work at 6
a.m.
"I don't want to have to worry when I go outside what I'll meet," she
said.
Anthony Caruso, a "northender who cares about this city," conceded
that he and the others were making familiar arguments.
"You're right. Not in
my neighborhood. Not in my back yard," he said. "Our property values aren't that
high. We're not west-siders. Think about the quality of life."
Deon Oliver,
captain of The Salvation Army's Springfield Corps, sought to allay concerns. He
said the organization has taken steps to ensure that people like Larkin are no
longer admitted.
Oliver added that the organization screens residents for
drug and alcohol abuse, does not take in sex offenders and maintains a 10 p.m.
curfew.
Oliver added that the homeless shelter is only part of the mission.
Tentative plans for the new site call for medical clinics, classrooms, senior
services, computer labs, a gymnasium, a theater, music rooms and an indoor
swimming pool.
The charity also provides activities and classes for adults
and children.
"Two-thirds of the residents in our facility are employed,"
said Oliver. "They don't just sit around."
The proposed shelter would house
15 women, 35 men and 20 people in family units.
The Salvation Army says its
building at Sixth and Carpenter streets is old and cramped, and much of the

I was looking at a post from Rich Miller's Capitol Fax Blog, and wondering why the trial of former Governor George Ryan isn't a big deal right now. I think the short answer is, it's too early. Jury selection just got under way, it's been a while since the indictment, so it isn't exactly "top of mind," and the really juicy stuff won't come out for a few months. Of course, it's just a guess on my part, but if I were a high ranking democrat, I would make sure all the great stuff from the trial got out, and I would lobby the State Supreme Court to ALLOW RECORDING DEVICES IN STATE COURTROOMS. The fact that the media doesn't have full access to the courts is, in my opinion, a violation of our rights. I guess there are a few topics here, have at them.

Granted, I'm not a big fan of the Pledge Of Allegiance anyway, but the ruling by a California judge that the phrase "under god" violates the rights of children who have a right to be "free from a coercive requirement to affirm God," is a very good thing. I think Congressman Ray Lahood actually lost political popularity when he decided he might try to run for Governor. Just by throwing his name in the political mix of possible candidates, I think Lahood chipped away at a message he had worked so hard to cultivate over the last decade. The Peoria Congressman was a guy even a few Dems liked because he portrayed the image of an honest moderate conservative, but it seems that image has been shot to hell over the past few months, starting with Terri Schiavo's case, and working its way to his catty comments about Jim Edgar "taking his sweet time." Racism In Springfield?

The SJ-R says Michael Newman committed theft when he was 19. Even if this is so, and I have no reason to doubt the article's authenticity, it doesn't mean that racism doesn't exist in the city of Springfield. I have never come across a town that had so much racism, that it was actually acceptable to a wide percentage of the population. This is why racism has to exist in some of our city departments, even if it has taken a kinder, gentler tone. Has it manifested itself into the city's hiring practices? Perhaps. But what has the mayor done about this problem? I guess we'll have to wait and see. The question is, do you think it is the mayor's problem?

I'm not sure whether it's more sad, or frightening, to realize how much space on the roadways is taken up by petulant children who stamp their feet and whine when someone expects them to obey the speed limit, and then implements the technology to require them to do so.With all the crying and hair-pulling going on over the plan to use cameras to enforce, um, what do they call that again? Oh, yeah, the law -- man, what kind of society is it that would devise limits on people's behavior and then expect people to adhere to them? I've heard the excuses a million times, and they're every bit as laughable as ever.
It's just a big money-making scheme. If so, it's a pretty lame plan, because you can so easily foil their nefarious plan by simply obeying the law. They can't get a dime out of you that way.
They set the limits too low. Listen, sparky, just because you may be able to move 103 mph in the work zone without striking the flag man doesn't mean everybody can -- so we set the limits at a reasonable level for the entire population. Trust me, I wouldn't mind a special set of rules and laws tailored specifically for me -- there are very people in the world that I would trust with the power to decide who lives and who dies, but I would trust myself with it. However, that seems impractical, so I'll abide by the societal imperative that I don't get to make that decision. So is it really too much to ask that you don't decide for yourself what a proper speed limit is?
I don't trust the technology. My new personal favorite, tossed out today by my colleague and noted traffic scofflaw Mike Wilson. Umm, they're called cameras, Mike. I realize you're something of a Luddite, but still, maybe you've heard of them? They take pictures! I think they could really catch on in the next few years.
Just obey the laws, kids. Stop whining, stop bitching, just take your foot off the gas slightly and arrive at your destination 3-4 minutes later (but with your $375 dollars still intact). If you check your drivers' license, it has your date of birth on it. Most of you, if you do the math in your head, will discover that you have reached the age of adulthood. Now start acting like it.

(Just as an aside, you may have heard my colleague Mike trying to rationalize his own lawbreaking behavior by accusing me of the same anti-social acts of which he is routinely guilty. This bothered me at first, until I remembered that Mike has absolutely no credibility, partly because of his erratic nonsensical ramblings on the air, and partly because of the random cut-and-pasted sentences that make up what he charmingly refers to as his "blog." In light of those glaring deficiencies in his talent and character, you may be wondering why we even keep him on the air. Primarily it's because he doesn't require a salary and will simply work for the spare packets of cold medicine, containing pseudoephedrine, that he periodically lifts from the station first-aid kit.)

My response is that Jim should worry more about his show and less about his blog...because at last check, he's not getting paid to blog...or is he, because all he does now is sit around at work and type on his damn blog. Get back to work Jim, you slacker. Maybe your show would be better if you didn't spend all day blogging and didn't get all your show prep from my show the previous day! That's what I call getting busted...back to you Jim.

Surprise, There Is Still Racism In Segregated Springfield

It might be a socio-economic problem now, but the fact that Springfield police pulled over more minorities reflects that the roots of racism run deep in the capital city. When I talked about this on Tuesday, two different individuals admitted live on the air, that they wouldn't let their daughters marry black guys.
